Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane has expressed his primary concern regarding the current South African Under-20 squad, emphasizing the importance of player development and transition. As a pivotal figure in the team, Letsholonyane is keenly aware of the challenges that young athletes face as they progress in their careers. His insights shed light on the dynamics of youth football in South Africa and the necessity for a structured pathway to ensure that these talented players continue to thrive.

Letsholonyane serves as the assistant coach for the SA Under-20 team, collaborating closely with head coach Raymond Mdaka. This coaching staff also includes fellow assistants Donald Mojaki and Karabo Mogudi, all of whom bring a wealth of experience to the technical team. Together, they are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of football talent in South Africa, focusing on both skill development and tactical awareness.

Recently, the SA Under-20 team achieved significant success by clinching the COSAFA Championship held in Mozambique. Their dominant performances throughout the tournament not only showcased their skill but also earned them a spot in the Under-20 AFCON finals scheduled for 2025, marking their first qualification since 2020. This achievement has sparked excitement and hope for the future of South African football.

The squad boasts a number of promising young players who are currently competing in the SA top-flight league with prestigious clubs. Among these talents are Siyabonga Mabena, Kutlwano Letlhaku, and Asekho Tiwani from Mamelodi Sundowns. Their performances at the club level are crucial for their development as they also represent the Under-20 national team, showcasing the potential to become future stars of South African football.

Additionally, the team features rising talents like Mfundo Vilakazi from Kaizer Chiefs, along with Jody Ah Shene and Witbooi Emile from Cape Town City FC. Another notable player is Shandre Campbell, who is currently making strides in Belgium with Club NXT. The diverse backgrounds of these players contribute to a rich tapestry of talent that the coaching staff aims to cultivate.

Letsholonyane's primary worry pertains to the continuity of the Under-20 players as they transition to the Under-23 level. The Under-23 team has been without a coach and has not participated in any matches since March 2023, raising concerns about player development and readiness. Former coach David Notoane resigned following the team’s inability to qualify for the 2023 AFCON finals in Morocco, leaving a significant gap in leadership and direction for the squad.

There were discussions regarding Morena Ramoreboli, the coach of Jwaneng Galaxy, being appointed to the Under-23 coaching position. However, he has since taken on the role of interim coach for the Botswana senior national team, further complicating the situation for the Under-23 squad. The lack of a dedicated coach and competitive play is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed to maintain the momentum gained by the Under-20s.

“We are currently uncertain about the status of the Under-23s, as they lack a coach and have not been actively engaging in matches. This situation is indeed concerning,” Letsholonyane shared with SoccerBets.

“However, this matter does not fall solely under our purview. I am confident that the Technical Director, Walter Steenbok, along with the relevant stakeholders, is strategizing to address this issue, and I anticipate that they will soon provide clarity on the path forward.

“The Under-20s are brimming with talent, and it is our duty to guide them effectively. We remain hopeful that as they progress to the Under-23 level, there will be sufficient support and opportunities to ensure their ongoing development and success in their football careers.”
